Academic Support : Accelerator Program

Students in the Lower School are assessed for reading progress every year. Those rising first and second graders who we feel will be served better by a different language curriculum will be encouraged to enroll in the Accelerator Program. Middle Schoolers who might be better served by a similar class, which will also incorporate organizational and study skills, will be encouraged to delay their study of a modern foreign language to enroll in this program. This is a free program provided by Westchester Country Day to help these children.

Presently, the program is using the Wilson Reading System which provides a multisensory, structured, language technique teaching system. It teaches students how to fluently and accurately decode. It is unlike traditional phonics programs in that instruction is very interactive and multisensory. It also thoroughly teaches total word construction and not just phonics. Students learn to spell as they learn to decode. Reading fluency is stressed; this helps with reading comprehension. The children are worked with individually or in a small group. This has been a very successful program for us and the children and parents are happy and excited about the program as well. Our goal is to help children to read confidently and to be a lifelong reader.
