Middle School

Safe Haven

Westchester's Middle School is a safe haven in which students are encouraged to explore academic, artistic, and athletic interests. With an energetic teaching staff, students enthusiastically develop learning and study habits as they continue to solidify the foundation imperative for lifelong education. Teachers model practices that encourage students to consistently strive for their best in every endeavor. Focused on educating the entire student, our middle school program offers opportunities for character development through service learning activities, leadership positions, as well as a personal advisory program.

Greater Responsibility

Middle School students (Grades 6-8) move from the self-contained classrooms of the Lower School to a rotating schedule with different teachers for every subject. This allows the students to take greater responsibility for their learning. Self-discovery through reading, writing, science experiments, solving math problems, and mastering a foreign language becomes an important part of their daily lives. All Middle School classes are taught at honors level, which pushes students to think critically and analytically, not simply memorizing facts and statistics, but developing skills that will last a lifetime. Middle School students study literature, grammar, mathematics, science, social studies, and either Mandarin or Spanish. Instruction in art, music, technology, public speaking, and physical education rounds out their schedules.

Our Curriculum

At WCDS we work to prepare our students with the most essential knowledge and skills for the 21st century. Concepts and ideas transfer across curricular areas, collaboration is encouraged among faculty, and students can make cross-curricular connections.

7 C's of Curriculum

Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking, Cultural Awareness, Cross-curricular Connections, and Character Development are the 7 C's of Curriculum that focus on the skills most important for our rapidly changing world. WCDS faculty incorporate the development of these essential skills within their classrooms each and every day.

Enduring Understandings

By focusing our teaching with the "end" in mind, Enduring Understandings help our teaching go beyond rote memorization to student construction of conceptual understanding. Crafted by each department and division, our Enduring Understandings show what we want our students to learn after digging deeply and uncovering what is not necessarily obvious. With understanding at the heart of our curriculum, our students are more likely to transfer what has been learned to new and different situations. This application strengthens their ability to make inferences and develop insights about the world around them.
