The Arts at Westchester

On canvas, in a concert hall, or on stage, Westchester Country Day celebrates students who pursue artistic expression.

We believe the arts are an integral part of a complete education, and we recognize their value in enhancing a student’s self-esteem and academic performance. As a result, our arts programming is not simply extracurricular -- it is woven into the fabric of the Westchester experience. As schools and governments across the country are cutting resources for the arts, we are investing in building our programs and expanding our facilities.

An essential goal of the arts at Westchester is to encourage students to uncover their artistic gifts and develop their skills toward excellence in a safe and supportive environment. Much like our philosophy on learning, we desire to nurture a lifelong enjoyment of creative expression in each of our students.

Students in every grade level are offered opportunities in visual arts, music, and drama. From our theatre productions to our concerts and art shows, the entire school community enjoys the remarkable talents of our students and their teachers in a variety of annual arts events.

Benefits of Arts Education

Research has shown that a fine arts education develops collaborative skills, technological competencies, flexible thinking, and an appreciation for diversity. Through a fine arts education, a child learns how to convey ideas, feelings, and emotions by creating his or her own images while performing music, art, and drama.

A student learns to analyze, critique, and draw reasoned conclusions from what they see and hear. The visual and performing arts program nurtures creativity, self-expression, intellectual development, team work and self-confidence. Beginning in kindergarten and continuing through Upper School, Westchester provides a diverse arts program that helps students learn to convey ideas, feelings, and emotions through the creation of art and the performance of music and drama.
