Westchester Welcomes Students Back to School
Westchester Country Day School welcomed students back to school on Aug. 25 for the start of the 2021-2022 school year.
The Westchester community includes more than 400 students in grades pre-K through 12 and 87 faculty and staff members. Students come to WCDS from all over the Triad, including Advance, Archdale, Asheboro, Clemmons, Colfax, Greensboro, High Point, Jamestown, Kernersville, Lexington, Oak Ridge, Thomasville, Trinity and Winston-Salem.
The year began with a Convocation ceremony in the Finch Center attended by the senior class and their families. Cobb Atkinson, head of school, welcomed students and faculty and shared that the first day of school is his favorite day of the year.
“The beginning of the school year is ripe with potential and possibility for all of us. When I consider the learning, growth and discovery that will be attained over the coming academic year I’m inspired by all that will come to pass,” said Atkinson. “Our school family is incredibly strong, deeply committed to our mission and to one another, and when we arrive at the last day of the school year, Thursday, June 2, 2022, we can look back with pride on all we have accomplished.”
Senior Olivia Beaver, student government president, also shared remarks emphasizing the special impact Westchester has had on her and her classmates. She also encouraged the student body to practice kindness to one another each day.
“Kindness is the key to community, and if we continue being the kindest versions of ourselves, we can strengthen our already strong community here,” said Beaver. “I encourage everyone listening right now to make an effort to show kindness every day. Whether it’s something as small, but meaningful as a compliment or something more than that, take time and do it. Our world needs more kindness in it, and we can start right here in this school making a difference.”
Westchester is continuing to promote health and safety for students and faculty given the ongoing concern of COVID-19. Masks are required for all individuals indoors, and hand hygiene and physical distancing are encouraged throughout the day.
