WCDS Opens the 2023-2024 School Year
Westchester Country Day School opened the 2023-2024 school year on Wednesday, Aug. 23, with a Convocation ceremony attended by faculty, staff, parents and students.
The school began the new year with 460 students and 90 faculty/staff members. Students at Westchester come from communities across the Piedmont Triad, including Archdale, Asheboro, Clemmons, Colfax, Greensboro, High Point, Jamestown, Kernersville, Lexington, Oak Ridge, Randleman, Thomasville, Trinity, and Winston-Salem.
Mary Keever, interim head of school, began her new leadership role after 24 years in the Middle School at WCDS. She joined Westchester in 1999 as a language arts/literature teacher and became head of Middle School in 2012. She and her husband, Wes, have two children who attended Westchester from kindergarten: Dory, a 2021 graduate, and Abby, a senior.
Keever welcomed students and issued a challenge for the year to reach beyond their comfort zone as they try new activities and make new friends. She shared the idea of "turning fear into rocket fuel," which she came across during one of her summer reads, "The Light We Carry" by former first lady Michelle Obama.
"I look forward to working together with each of you this year to make an effort to make our worlds a little bigger and persevere even when we are scared or anxious," said Keever. "Together we can embrace the unknown where possibility glitters."
Keever also introduced Upper School Student Government leaders Ava Klein and Abby Williamson, as well as the 33 seniors in the Class of 2024.
