Mrs. Sloop is Wonder Woman. She possesses an arsenal of tools, including a lasso of wisdom, a pair of indestructible bracelets made of compassion, a tiara which allows her to see into the future and plan appropriately, and a range of devices that provide humor, support, and talent for every possible scenario.
She has displayed her superpowers as a teacher in both the Lower School and Middle School at Westchester. Mrs. Sloop joined our school faculty in 2008 with more than 20 years of experience teaching elementary school in South Carolina. First teaching fifth grade, two years ago she moved to the Middle School, where she has made quite an impact.
In 2020, Mrs. Sloop was awarded the T. Austin Finch Chair of Distinguished Teaching, recognizing her outstanding classroom teaching and commitment to the school’s mission, as well as her own commitment to herself as a lifelong learner.
Mrs. Sloop holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Appalachian State University and a Master of Education in gifted education from Converse College. She is a dedicated teacher and student. Her list of professional development accomplishments is long and impressive, including the Library of Congress Teacher Institute in Washington, D.C., and the National Endowment for the Humanities Teacher Institute in Lowell, Massachusetts.
Her students describe her fondly: “There is never a moment where she isn’t trying to bring our spirits up. She is always looking out for us and tries to help each and every one of us out no matter the problem. All in all she is an amazing teacher and an even better person.”
