Westchester Country Day School senior Carter Scavo’s goal of becoming a U.S. Marine Corps officer is off to a strong start.

Scavo received both an NROTC Scholarship and an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy during a school assembly on April 25. Capt. Tom Brown, executive officer of U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Station Raleigh, presented the NROTC Marine Option Scholarship. Retired U.S. Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Norman Cooling also recognized Scavo with an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy.

Scavo spent his early childhood around the military and was inspired by his grandfather’s career service as a Marine Corps officer.

“It gave me an immense respect for our armed forces and instilled in me a desire to serve our country,” said Scavo. “Westchester has played an immense role in helping me earn this appointment. Mrs. [Raegan] Atkinson helped make the exhausting process of obtaining a nomination and an appointment more manageable. The academics and athletics at Westchester are top tier. These helped make me the well-rounded person that the Naval Academy is looking for.”

Scavo is the son of Billy and Amber Scavo of High Point.
