WCDS Student's Writing Published by New York Times
A Westchester Country Day School student was recently published by the New York Times.
Eleventh grader Kirian Veach is one of 15 winners in the New York Times’ second annual 100-Word Narrative Contest. Her tiny memoir of a meaningful life moment was selected from about 13,000 entries by teens from around the world.
WCDS English teacher Allison Albert encouraged Veach and her AP English Language classmates to submit their narratives to the NYT teen contest following a 100-word memoir assignment a few months ago.
Her memoir titled “Messi in the Making” is an amusing retelling of how Veach won a participation award in a youth soccer game.
Veach writes, “I could see my destiny before my eyes — with the goalie distracted, my talent would finally shine through! I thought to myself, she shoots, she scores, my moment, and the crowd goes … mild? Confused, I looked to see my coach’s disappointed face.”
The full 100-word story and a photo of her childhood soccer trophy are featured on the New York Times website, along with the other winning narratives.
