Jerry Cornwell was inducted into the Westchester Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. She was a standout in basketball, softball, tennis, and volleyball at Westchester, and continued to play and coach basketball in college and beyond. During her time here on the hard court, Cornwell boasted more than 1,200 career points, was the MVP in state and conference tournaments, was All-Conference many years, received the Female Athlete of the Year Award, and was a member of the state championship team three years in a row. She was also All-Conference in volleyball and softball, and led those teams to conference championships as well. On the tennis court, she was a state doubles runner-up.

Cornwell received a basketball scholarship to the College of Charleston, and came back to Westchester to coach our girls to a state championship in 1984. She went on to become the head coach of the women’s basketball team at Guilford College from 1985 – 1990 and led that team to its first postseason play in school history three out of five seasons.
